BARANTI

Purulia is a backward and draught prone district in West Bengal, India. Baranti is a small picturesque hamlet by a beautiful lake surrounded by hillocks and forests under Santuri police station in this district. Majority of the villagers are below poverty level. Massive deforestation during the 1970s spelt havoc on flora and fauna of the area.

Muradi, a small railway station situated after 3 consecutive railway stations from Asansol, is 261 km away from Kolkata. Baranti or Ramchandrapur Irrigation Project can be reached from Muradi, by Trekker or Rickshaw. A water reservoir has been constructed by erecting a dam between Muradi Hill, at one side, and Baranti Hill, on the other. The water reservoir is being used for irrigation purpose and also for supplying drinking water to the local villages. The Panchkot Hill, at one side of the area and the Biharinath Hill, on the other, can be reached by trekking. The area is shrouded with trees like Sal, Mahua, Piyal, Palash etc. The forest is abode of faunas like Rabbits, Wild Boars, Foxes, Wolves and Dears. The reservoir swarms with seasonal birds. Coos of birds in the forest are worth-remembering. One can travel to Panchet, Maithan, Kalyaneshawari Temple and Jaichandi Hill from here. The entire Saturi P.S. area is covered with small hills and hillocks. The temperature remains quite high during the months of May & June but is very comfortable during August to March. The climate is beneficial to the patients suffering from heart and stomach ailments. Since last few years, this place has earned its fame as an important Eco-tourism destination in the Rahr Area of West Bengal. Inside the forest, a number of small hamlets are situated in scattered manner and most the dwellers are tribal and living below poverty line.

At present 2000 man-days are created every year and 250-300 families visit this place for its natural beauty. As a result local grocers, rickshaw pullers etc earn Rs.600000 to Rs.700000 per year, which helps local economy. Except that, four permanent staffs of our establishment are maintaining their families. In this way an unknown remote place is gradually developing.
